Let me be clear.
I have never fought in any war, or known any real hardship or protested
injustice…I mean really protested…not simply donated to a charity just to get
the telemarketer off the line.
I have never carried a friend to safety or shared my last cigarette with
a dying man. I’ve never performed life saving surgery with a pocket knife or
taken a bullet for a member of a royal family. (And on that…I really don’t think it should simply be left
up to the monarchists. Sure, if there is a monarchist around who can do it,
then he or she should do it. I would be pretty upset if I took the bullet and
found out later there was a monarchist standing beside me who made no attempt.)
The list of things I have never done is endless. It’s not that I haven’t
ever done something…I’m sure I have.
I don’t want a medal. Or a certificate or even my name in the paper.
What I do want is a little respect. Respect for standing up and proudly
saying “I’ve done nothing great or grand but then, I have never stood in the
way of someone who has.”
…and that’s got to count for something.
